Are the downloadable ebooks for kindle also readable on a computer (Mac)?
Basically, I was hoping to download an eBook from Amazon, but all that’s available is Kindle (unless I’m missing something). I don’t have a Kindle but would like to be able to read the book on my MacBook Pro (Leopard). Is that possible? Or would my computer need specific software to read the Kindle file?
The Kindle books from Amazon.com can only be read on a Kindle. They are in a proprietary format called .AZW. Unfortunately, there’s no software for a Mac or a PC that can read .AZW files at this time, although I’ve read blog entries about a way to strip the DRM protection from the files. However, if you wanted to do that, I doubt you be wanting to pay $3-10 for an ebook, either.
If you want to read ebooks on your Mac, try going to the various retailers who sell other ebook formats : Baen (www.webscription.com), eReader (www.ereader.com) or to Paperback Digital (www.paperbackdigital,com).
The Baen site has lots of books you can download for free, and offers the titles in several different formats. The eReader site has the largest catalog of titles, and offers a 10% discount to those who receive the biweekly newsletter. Paperback Digital has a catalog that’s almost as large, and they give you a rebate on your purchases good towards future purchases.
Another place you might try with free PDF books you can download is WOWIO (www.wowio.com). You can only download three books a day, but the catalog includes several webcomics and independent comic books.
