Register US copyright and ISBN for ebook or book?

Hi,

I would like to register US copyright and ISBN for my ebook or book, even though I do not reside in US. I am not sure about the actual procedures to get my ebook/book registered. So, I have searched over the internet and found there are a lot of companies involve in registering copyright and ISBN business. I would like to know which companies are highly reputable and providing the best and complete services (register, preparing all documents, filling and etc) at affordable price?

What are the things that I should know in advance before applying copyright and ISBN? I understand that I should register copyright but do I actually need to apply ISBN?

Thanks.

http://www.copyright.gov is the official site to register your US copyright. Look over the website, read the FAQs, and I think you can print the papers you need to fill out for copyright.

ISBN, there are many vanity presses that will get you an ISBN for your book when you buy their service packages. You can also go to the official company that’s sanctioned to sell ISBNs and buy directly from them. THe last time I checked, the price for a block of ISBNs was about $300 – they don’t sell individual ISBNs, so you have to buy a block of them. Many vanity presses offer extra services such as editing, marketing, and cover design, but the problem is that they do a subpar job. You might be better off hiring a professional editor and freelance designer for your book if you want it to be professional looking. Also, hire your own marketer, because vanity presses fall short in that department. You can easily pay thousands of dollars to a vanity press and all you get is a mediocre editing, a bad cover design, your book posted on their website for sale, and your marketing will consist of them creating facebook and myspace pages (you can do that yourself!). WHatever you do, stay away from PublishAmerica and Xilbris.

It took me a bit of digging to find the company that you can buy your ISBN from (if you buy it from that company then you own it, if you get it from a vanity press then they own the ISBN; it’s a long explanation about why one way is better than the other, so I wont’ get into it), but if I find it again then I’ll edit this post to add the link and you can take a look at it yourself.

If you want to sell your book in local bookstores and at different places over the Internet, like Amazon then you need an ISBN. You don’t need an ISBN if you just want to print copies to sell yourself from your own website or out of your home.
